Best hip pack I've ever worn. There is ample room inside for plenty of gear. The most I've ever loaded up was a small first aid kit, a stuffable windbreaker, gloves, beanie cap, lightweight fleece, miscellaneous energy bars, a sandwich, a 1L water bag with hose, and water bottle in the outer pockets. And it never felt like it was sagging, or bouncing around. As stated, you can fit a small water bag, I use this product: http://www.amazon.com/Platy-Soft-Bottle-Closure-Cap/dp/B002LSS68C/ref=pd_sim_sg_14 in the 1L size, but I think the one I have is a previous version, more rectangular. I attach a drinking hose and then zip the bag closed with the hose sticking out. There is a liner between the water bag pouch, which keeps it separated from other items in the bag.
Also, there are so many adjustment straps to help keep the bag tight against your body. This is key for a bigger hip pack. I've tried a lot of different types, but this one by far fits the best, even though it is by far the biggest. And when it is really loaded down, there is a padded shoulder strap that is removable. I don't like using it if I can, because it sort of defeats the purpose of having the freedom of no straps, but it does the job well for days the pack is really loaded down.
I also like the outer pocket. It is a good place to store things you will access frequently, such as snacks and camera parts. The main zipper is more difficult to get into when the bag is properly cinched down to your body, but the outer pocket is easy to get into. There are also mesh pouches on the buckle strap which can hold a surprsing amount of things. More energy bars, or smaller camera parts fit inside easily. Lots of storage!
The only (small) complaint I have is the exterior water bottle holders. The elastic is very tight, and even though you can actually put a 1L Nalgene bottle in it, it is very difficult to do so. Even smaller bottles are hard to get in the pockets. If you are out solo, it can be a challenge to get bottle, and replace it when done drinking. Bottles sure as heck aren't coming out of this bag! I think they could have been a little looser while still allowing a snug fit of bottles.
Overall, the main selling feature of this pack is the fit. With a myriad of adjustment straps, it will fit almost any body shape, although the bag was too loose for my small-waisted girlfriend, even with the buckle fully tightened. Combine the great fit with a huge amount of storage, and you have a winner!

Hands down the best lumbar (fanny) pack out there. I have bought some others in the past and they would hang off of your back and drive you crazy and were uncomfortable. Not the case with the mountainsmith. It's roomy, but not bulky. Enough room for a days worth of equipment, and I can hang a hammock (packed) and fishing pole (case) off the bottom straps too. When hiking au naturale (without shoes) I can put my low cut boots on the outside and cinch them in with the yellow cord.

This is the third edition I have owned of this pack. Each one has lasted me 8 to 10 years of daily use. The current version has many significant improvements and new features compared to the previous version, plus it is more comfortable when carrying loads. A great product!
